      Job Summary

      Supervision

      Supervision involves supervising assigned areas to achieve the department’s goals.

      1. Supervise the storage and conditioning of all grains

      2. Coordinate with location managers to receive all grain volume measurements, grain temperature measurements, and condition reports when needed

      3. Coordinate truck transportation for on-farm grain pick up and delivery

      4. Supervise and coordinate truck and rail grain shipments from the elevator

      5. Supervisor grain originator.

      Safety and Maintenance

      The origination manager will uphold safety and maintenance policies and regulations.

      1. Ensure that department facilities and equipment meet all federal, state, and OSHA regulations; and company insurance requirements

      2. Receive no OSHA, state, or federal citations

      3. Inform all employees and customers of safe product handling and operating procedures

      4. Maintain and update monthly a maintenance schedule for all department facilities and equipment

      5. Comply with the current Safety Program

      6. Ensure all department staff participates in company safety and right-to-know meetings

      7. Ensure all department staff have read and understood the Emergency Action Plan and the Hazard Communication Plan; a signature from every employee is required

      Recordkeeping

      Recordkeeping involves maintaining accurate records, including a consolidated daily position record and grain related records, and developing and maintaining a working knowledge of grain industry requirements.

      Merchandising

      Merchandising involves establishing and communicating a grain marketing policy and a company grain policy, and determining daily bids.

      Establish company grain marketing policy

      1. Establish a company grain marketing policy with the general manager’s and board’s approval.  The policy should address the following:

            - Bids based on transportation:

                  * Unit train

                  * Single car

                  * Mini-train

                  * Truck

                  * Direct farm pickup

            - Margins in cents per bushel or percent based on settlement prices plus interest, storage and other costs

            - Amount of owned inventory or open grain position at any time

            - Price later contracts

            - Sales and hedging contracts (limits)

            - Deferred payment contracts

      Establish and communicate company grain policy

      1. Work with the general manager to establish a company grain policy and communicate the policy to customers.  The policy should address the following:

            - Storage rates-allocations and billings for accrued storage

            - Grain bank policy and rates

            - Drying rates and shrink discounts

            - Price later contracts and basis contracts

            - Receiving and loadout charges

            - Receiving hours

      Determine daily bids

      1. Determine daily bids based on desired margins and freight rates

      2. Select the best bids and record entries

      3. Be familiar with basis changes and protection

      4. Monitor surrounding competitive bids

      Grain Origination Profitability and Sales

      The origination manager will develop and implement programs and merchandising tools to establish the company as customers’ preferred merchandiser. 

      1. Submit an annual grain origination marketing plan to the general manager at the beginning of each year:

            - Market trends analysis

            - Market share analysis

            - Competitor analysis

            - Customer education/training

            - Market plan goals

      2. Coordinate and communicate with location managers regularly to ensure adequate quantity and quality of inventories are available to meet merchandising goals and customer needs. Communications may include:

            - Anticipated yields, quality, and moisture of new crop grain

            - Anticipated amount of grain to be delivered to each location

            -  Inventory needed at each location to meet merchandising goals and customer needs throughout the year

      3. Address customer complaints

      4. Lose no customers due to services provided by the department

      • Monitor SARA Title III—Emergency Planning & Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) and submit all required reports.
      • Compile Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) records and submit required reports.
      • Complete and submit TIER II report.
      • Comply with subpart VV requirements including Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) inspections, keep records and submit compliance reports.
      • Maintain subpart Kb (above ground storage tanks) inspections.
      • Comply with all Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
      • Maintain the Emergency Action Plan.
      • Comply with the Risk Management Plan (RMP) for hazardous substances.
      • Implement the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC) and submit necessary reports.
      • Monitor plant emissions, input data for 12 month rolling sum, and work with consultants to complete the Emissions Inventory Questionnaire (EIQ).
      • Work with consultants and attend seminars related to safety, environmental, and site security issues.
      • Evaluate and report any potential developments/additions to reporting requirements
      • Any and all other State, Federal or other jurisdictional reporting requirements as required.

      Education/Background Requirements:

      • Bachelor of Science in a related field and two to four years experience in related field.  *Equivalent experience may be a substitute to a bachelor’s degree.
      • Knowledge of EPA, IDNR, OSHA, and DOT regulations and reports, concerning air, water, and site security. 
      • Experience in improving and enforcing plant safety programs.

      Responsibilities:
      • Learn all facets of the ethanol process including; cook, distillation, evaporation, dryers, regenerative thermal oxidizer, centrifuges, grain system and water treatment.
      • Ability to learn and operate DCS (computer control system) for the plant.
      • Follow and help with development of Standard Operating Procedures for plant start-up, shut down, cleaning and batching.
      • Stay within operating parameters as set by Plant/Production Manager.
      • Keep accurate and timely logs.
      • Collect samples and do the necessary lab tests to ensure consistent and quality product.
      • Monitor and make adjustments on the (DCS) computer according to the results of the samples and to keep within parameters.
      • Facility housekeeping including control room and break room clean and including mopping and hosing down plant floors.
      • Communications with oncoming shift to brief on what has happened and what is supposed to be done during the next shift.
      • Work closely with maintenance and communicate any mechanical problems.
      • Actively participate in 5s and TPM programs.
      • Communicate with the Laboratory and learn testing procedures including, but not limited to yeast counts, microwave analyzer, HPLC and the GC.
      • Complete any and all tasks assigned by the Plant Management.
      • Help out in other areas as needed.
      • 12 hour shift work including a three day weekend every other week. Currently, only Night positions are available.
      • Be available occasionally for call in work and overtime.
      • Participate in ongoing safety programs, safety training and follow all safety procedures.
      • Other tasks as assigned.

      Background / Experience:
      • Experience in industrial processing plants helpful.
      • Hard working, self-motivated individuals.
      • Must be able to manage confined space entry, climb ladders and steps, lift up to 60 lbs and work at heights.
      • Applicants with experience in an ethanol plant will be considered first.
