Nebraska State & National Hand Cornhusking Contest - Oct. 20 & 21

The best corn huskers in Nebraska will gather in Central City on October 20 & 21 for the Nebraska State & National Hand Corn Husking Contest and Fall Festival, sponsored, in part, by Green Plains. The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Merrick County Fairgrounds.

This contest has actually been around for years, since around 1924 or so, but Central City Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kendra Jefferson said this is only the third year Central City has hosted the state contest and the first year Central City has hosted the National level.

It is a timed contest where competitors see who can hand husk the most corn. Depending on the age division, the contest involves 10 to 30 minutes of husking.

Once the time trial is completed, the amount of corn each team husked is weighed. They also take into consideration the amount of corn that was left behind, and that total is deducted from the total amount of corn the contestants picked.

Contestants select from 14 competitive divisions that include youths, men, women, senior citizens, 4-H and FFA. The top three competitors in each category receive awards. The top two in each division will advance to the national contest.

Along with the corn husking competition, a variety of other events will be taking place, including a flea market, exotic animal petting zoo, classic car show, living history displays and antique tractor display. There will also be a craft show and children's activities with pumpkin painting. All events are at the fairgrounds.
